Liability in a String of Violent Robberies in Las Vegas, An Attorney Discusses
It can happen to anyone at any time. One moment you could be going about your business, the next, you could be assaulted, robbed or car-jacked. The pain and suffering of such a violent robbery can be devastating and last a lifetime.
That’s what happened to a 78-year-old man who was simply visiting his favorite Mexican restaurant in the area of Eastern Ave and Fremont St. He wasn’t expecting it, but as he exited his vehicle, he was surrounded and attacked by a group of teenagers. They took his wallet, his cellphone, and his Ford Taurus. Additionally, the victim was knocked to the ground and punched several times by the suspects.
Prior to the assault, the teens were reportedly involved in a string of car-jackings that specifically targeted elderly victims. Fortunately, four of the juveniles were apprehended. Police are still looking for two more suspects.
Losses associated with violence
The victim, who worked as a security guard, suffered severe injuries in the attack. These include:
- Facial fractures
- Swelling of his right eye
- Mental and emotional trauma to the victim and his family
Furthermore, the victim feared that he may lose his job due to his injuries.
In this case, there were cameras installed on the premises, which captured footage of the attack. However, the property owner could have done more to prevent this horrible event from happening.
According to the video, the violent robbery not only happened in broad daylight – it happened directly in front of the restaurant. If the restaurant had adequate security personnel, the suspects could have been stopped in their tracks.
Filing a personal injury claim for negligent security
Patrons in Las Vegas should be able to visit restaurants and other properties without the risk of being violently assaulted. Property owners are legally obligated to provide an adequate level of security. When they fail to do so, they can be held liable for any injuries, or other losses associated with an attack on their property.
Should you or a loved one be a victim of violence on commercial property, you may be eligible for compensation for:
- Medical expenses
- Current and future lost wages
- Pain, suffering and anguish
- Inability to engage in everyday activities
