Teen ADHD and Texting Equals High Accident Risks

Thursday, August 01, 2013

Texting behind the wheel is so dangerous that even normal teenagers drive as badly as teenagers with ADHD when they are texting behind the wheel. That data came from a new study that was published recently in the journal Pediatrics.

The study confirms that teenagers with ADHD may be at a much higher risk of accidents because of their poor driving skills. However, when the same teenagers also text behind the wheel, those accident risks simply skyrocket.

The results of the study are very interesting to Las Vegas car accident lawyers, because millions of American teenagers have been diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. In fact, it is estimated that more than 6 million American children have been diagnosed with this mental disorder at some point.

Symptoms of ADHD include difficulty paying attention in school, distraction, difficulty finishing school work, procrastination, disorganization, and forgetfulness. These symptoms can not only affect a person’s learning abilities and his social life, but can also play havoc when he's behind the wheel.

The study found that teenagers, who suffer from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, were much more likely to stray from their lanes. In fact, teenagers with ADHD strayed out of their lanes of 1.8% of the time. The researchers attempted to compare the driving skills of teenagers who suffered from the condition and those who did not. When teenagers with ADHD were texting while driving, they were likely to stray from the lanes about 3% of the time.

However, when teenagers who do not suffer from the condition began texting at the wheel, the researchers found that they were likely to stray from the lanes about 2% of the time. In this case, the distraction impaired a normal teenager’s driving ability to the same extent as a teenager with ADHD.

Elevator Maintenance Company, Casino Facing Damages Claim in Slip and Fall

Wednesday, July 24, 2013

A woman who suffered serious injuries in a slip and fall accident in an elevator at an Atlantic City casino resort has filed a lawsuit against the casino as well as the elevator maintenance company.

The woman says that she was in an elevator at the Atlantic City Hilton, when the elevator dropped slightly, and this caused her to catch her foot on the edge of the floor. As a result, she fell inside the elevator, and suffered head and back injuries.

According to the lawsuit, as a result of the injuries, the woman suffered a concussion, a mild traumatic brain injury, and cerebral blood clot. As a result of those injuries, she continues to suffer from post-concussion syndrome, lightheadedness, frequent headaches, fatigue, ringing in the years, loss of sleep, memory loss as well as several musculoskeletal injuries.

The lawsuit also claims that as a result of the injuries, she suffered mental anguish, embarrassment and humiliation. The lawsuit alleges heavy substantial medical expenses as a result of the injuries.

According to the lawsuit, the casino as well as the company that was hired to maintain the elevator was aware of a leveling problem with the device before her accident. However, these problems were not properly addressed, and the lawsuit alleges that the casino as well as elevator company did not make timely repairs of the problem with the elevator.

The company also failed to remove the elevator from service when it found out that the elevator had a leveling defect that could increase the risk of an accident. The casino and the elevator maintenance company are also accused of failing to warn patrons at the hotel about the dangerous conditions in the elevator.

Dress Right to Prevent Injuries in a Motorcycle Accident

Friday, July 19, 2013

There is very little protection that a motorcyclist has against serious injuries when he's involved in a motorcycle accident. The kind of clothing or gear that he is wearing plays a critical role in determining the extent and severity of his injuries. Whether you're a beginner motorcyclist or a seasoned professional, your risk of injuries can be significantly reduced if you're dressed right for motorcycling.

The most important piece of gear that you could wear while motorcycling is the right helmet. Your helmet should be approved by the Department of Transportation, and must come with a compliance sticker. Helmets that are not approved by Department of Transportation may be dangerous, or defective, or may not be sturdy or strong to protect from injury during an accident. If your helmet has been damaged in an accident, buy yourself a new helmet.

Eye protection is very important when you're motorcycling. The windshield on a motorcycle is not sufficient to protect your eyes from injuries. Wear safety goggles or glasses. Glasses must be shatterproof, and must be clear and free from scratches.

Never ride a motorcycle wearing shorts, or clothes that expose your legs or arms. Wear long pants, and clothing made of tough and resistant material like leather. Such material can help provide protection from injuries like road rash. Invest in a good motorcycle jacket in denim or corduroy, and always wear gloves while motorcycling. Going barehanded can result in severely painful road rash and abrasions when you hit the ground in an accident. Road rash may seem like a minor injury, but it can take weeks to heal and can be very painful. Your feet must be properly protected with over-the-ankle boots.
