Automakers Set Zero Highway Fatality Target

Thursday, January 22, 2015

Spurred by lower accident fatality numbers over the past few years, several automakers have set for themselves an ambitious goal - zero traffic accident fatalities within the next few years.

Recently, Nissan’s CEO posted a statement on the company website calling this a a significant turning point for the automobile industry. There is no reason not to believe that we will see a time with zero traffic accident fatalities within our lifetime. At Volvo, the company has set for itself a target of zero highway fatalities to be reached through the new automobiles that it plans to launch over the next few years. Towards this goal, the company has also opened a safety program at its headquarters in Sweden.

Volvo has been in the forefront of helping reduce the number of people killed in accidents. It was one of the leading automakers to design cars specifically to help reduce pedestrian accident fatalities. Several Volvo models now come with pedestrian avoidance systems that detect pedestrians in the path of the vehicle, and automatically slam on the brakes to avoid hitting a pedestrian.

Not all highway safety technologies however, are created equal. Some seem to work better than most to help reduce highway fatalities. For instance, electronic stability control systems were made standard back in 2008, and have been found to be extremely helpful in helping drivers retain control of vehicles, in conditions that would otherwise have contributed to a rollover. That has contributed to a reduction in traffic accident fatalities, because of the drop in persons being killed in such rollover accidents. Statistics show that since electronic stability control systems were mandated in automobiles, highway fatality rates have dropped by as much as 20%.
