Awareness of Tire Safety Can Help Prevent Teen Driver Accidents

Sunday, September 14, 2014

Educating teenagers about tire safety could go a long way in helping reduce accidents involving teen drivers in Las Vegas every year. In fact, teen driver training can help prevent nearly 300,000 car accidents involving novice drivers every year.

A study commissioned recently by tire manufacturer Michelin found that less than 50% of teenagers and their parents were fully confident that their driver’s education program prepared their teenagers to drive. Very few states require a teenager to have information about tire safety as part of the driver’s education program. Due to the lack of access to tire safety information, very few teenagers bother to check the condition of their tires.

The survey found that 27% of teenage drivers never bothered to check the condition of their tires before driving. Less than 50% checked the condition of their tires every month, which is a positive finding. Approximately 75% of the teenagers admitted that they had learned all they knew about tire maintenance from their parents, and not their driver education programs.

Tire defects, over-inflation, under-inflation, tire blowouts and tire failures are a major contributor to accidents every year. Fortunately, many of those accidents can be prevented, if drivers can regularly inspect or maintain their tires. Teenagers should be taught to check tire tread, by using the penny test. They should also be trained to check tire pressure using a gauge. Michelin is, in fact, in the process of launching a new program to raise awareness about tire safety and maintenance among teenagers.
