Safety during a Las Vegas Summer Road Trip

Monday, June 23, 2014

Many Las Vegas families will head off on road trips this summer. There are few things in life more fun than a road trip, and unfortunately during summer, there are very few things that are more dangerous.

Keep in mind that large numbers of families, and other motorists, including distracted drivers and intoxicated motorists, are sharing the roads with you this summer.

Before you begin driving, make sure that your SUV, pickup or RV is ready for the long journey ahead. Check your tires, and check tire pressure at least once a month. Don't forget your spare tire either.

If you're traveling in a truck, van or SUV, know that these vehicles are at a much higher risk of a rollover accident, because of their high center of gravity. Rollovers are the most devastating accidents, and can end in catastrophic injuries or fatalities. Look for signs of excessive wear and tear of your tire, and make sure that it is inflated to the optimum pressure.

Check your headlights, brake lights, turn signals, interior lights and other lights that keep you visible to other motorists on the road.

Make sure that your children are safely restrained. Car seats and booster seats must be properly installed. Make sure that children are restrained in a car seat or booster seat that is appropriate for their weight and age. Children below the age of 13 should always be riding in the backseat. Get all occupants of your car, even those sitting in the rear to wear seatbelts.

Summer is when there is also a spike in the number of fatalities involving children who are left behind in a hot car. Never leave children alone behind in a car, even if you believe that you will only dart into a convenience store for just a couple of minutes. Temperatures can rise quickly in a closed car, and the risk of suffocation is very real.
