If you are a pet owner, then you possibly suffer sleep deprivation without even being aware of it. According to new research, owners of pets are likely waking up several times at night to take care of their pets, let them out and for other ownership duties. That leads to loss of precious sleep that could lead to possibly sleep deprivation in the morning. Sleep deprivation is a major factor in drowsy driving, and increases the risks of being involved in an accident.
The research was presented recently at the annual meeting of the Associated Professional Sleep Societies. Earlier studies conducted at Mayo Clinic had found that only 1% of pet owners, who visited sleep clinics suffering from sleep deprivation and other sleep problems, reported that their pets gave them any sort of inconvenience at night. However, the new study finds that more number of sleep disorder patients are reporting disturbed sleep at night because of their four-legged and feathered companions. In 2013, 10% of pet owners reported that they were frequently annoyed at having to get up in the morning after being woken up by their pets. According to the research, among the 110 patients who were analyzed at the Mayo Clinic Center for Sleep Medicine in Arizona, approximately 46% had a pet, while 42% had more than one pet. Dogs, cats and birds are the three most popular pets in America.
The majority of pet owners are unaware of how exactly how big a disturbance pets can be. For instance, pets can make you wake up several times a night to be let out. Dogs that are asleep in your bedroom may whine or whimper all night long, or may snore, preventing you from falling asleep. A sick pet can also keep his owner up all night long. Pet birds can screech and squawk all night long.
