Feds Warn of More Cars Equipped with Defective Airbags

Sunday, October 19, 2014

The federal administration is warning Americans, that more cars than earlier believed are possibly equipped with defective airbags manufactured by Takata Corporation. These airbags have a defect that could result in injuries to occupants in the front seat.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recently admitted that a number of models of automobiles are now believed to be equipped with the defective airbags. The agency has asked the Japanese auto parts supplier to submit documents related to the chemicals that were used in the airbag. The defect seems to be linked to an inflator that is used in the airbags to help the airbags deploy or inflate at the time of impact. The inflator causes the airbags to deploy with excessive force, causing them to shoot shards or fragments or metal into the face of the front seat occupants. There is a risk of injuries, including eye injuries, wounds, lacerations, and puncture wounds in these cases.

Now the, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has ordered Takata to provide documents related to the defective airbags, and to answer questions about the government investigation of the defective airbags. That investigation was kicked off in June this year, after the federal administration received several reports of injuries, and fatalities involving the defective airbags.

At least five fatalities are linked to the airbags, which can explode with severe force, and injure occupants. Since 2008 alone, at least 10 automobile manufacturers have recalled more than 10 million cars in this country alone to replace the defective inflators. Several fatalities are also linked to these airbags.
