The biggest risks to children over the summer don't necessarily involve traveling in a car driven by a parent or caregiver. Over the next few weeks of summer, your children are at a high risk of being bitten by a pet or strange animal, or suffering a near- drowning incident in a pool or a hot tub.
Summer is the most fun time of the year for children. Unfortunately, it is also the most dangerous time for them. Hundreds of thousands of emergency room visits every year involve children, who had to be rushed to the hospital after suffering a choking accident, nearly drowning in a pool, being bitten by a dog, or ingesting household chemicals, and cleaners.
This summer, injury-proof your children. Your children will likely be spending time around pools, hot tubs and spas. Make sure that an adult is around at the pool at all times, and is able to keep an eye on the children. Secure the pool when it is not in use.
Children below the age of five are some of the biggest victims of dog bites every year. Teach children the appropriate ways of behaving around dogs. Be especially careful when your child is at the park, where owners may be walking their dogs.
Store household chemicals, cleaners, solvents and detergent safely and securely in locked cabinets. There had been a rash of recent poisoning incidents involving children swallowing laundry detergent pods.
Apply sunscreen liberally when your child is outside to avoid painful sunburn. Be extra cautious when a child is at the playground. Playground injuries account for many serious child-related injuries every year. Children can fall off swing sets, and slides, and hurt themselves badly. Your child's playground should have some kind of turf or grass surface that can protect against injury.
