According to research by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, accident risks around a NFL stadium and in the neighboring vicinity, spike when the home team loses or ties, compared with when the team wins.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety based its findings on data from areas around more than 31 NFL stadiums across the country. They found that the accident claim frequency spiked around home game days, compared to the days of the year when there were no games. That accident claim frequency was much higher in the areas which hosted the stadiums, and in the surrounding areas as well.
On days when the home team won, the claim rate was approximately 3.2% higher, compared to days without any home game. However, on days when the home team lost the game or tied the game, the claim rate was approximately 9.4% higher.
These interesting studies point to the distractions that affect a person driving home from the game. However, the rates of accidents were not consistent across NFL stadiums. In some areas, the accident rates were much lower than in other areas, even though the home team lost. That could possibly have much to do with the kind of enforcement in these areas, as well as the kind of traffic management techniques that were adopted in these areas.
